I had two things to blog about tonight, both regarding webcomics, and I tried to smoosh them together but the words got away from me. Part II is here.
After more than five years of talking about it and collecting ideas, Dave and I have finally started our own wubcomic, Kittens All The Way Down!
I mentioned a while ago that Intrasection totally has us beat on all serious standards for webcomics. We're heading in completely the opposite direction to pick out our own niche: there will be wildly inconsistent art (especially since we're both drawing), no overarching plot arcs or characterisation, and some of the strips will be needlessly obscure or absurd. We do intend to keep to a schedule, though: Kittens All The Way Down will update on Saturdays.
Over lunch today, I mentioned this project to my French friend Nicolas, who told me that the way I've been drawing strips—black outlines filled in with flat colours—is known as the Belgian style. My lines are still a bit wobbly for that, I think, but it's nice to have something to aspire to. Dave's style is much more like painting, as can be seen in the only strip we currently have up, Eggs.
In any case, I'm having incredible fun learning how to use a graphics tablet and already seeing a little improvement in my drawing skills. In school I always had great trouble with art classes. Even in primary school I used to get hugely frustrated with life drawing—I simply couldn't reduce the three-dimensional objects in front of me into something that would go onto a flat piece of paper. In high school, meanwhile, I was usually in trouble with my art teacher. For two years running, I was taught by the same woman for PE and art, my two worst subjects, and we made each other's lives a misery over them. I doodled constantly, though, like most teenagers. Somehow that never picked up the same emotional baggage as 'proper' drawing, and after years of slow improvement I think my doodles are good enough to illustrate our very silly comic ideas.
Because I can't resist it, here's a teaser for the comic I'm working on now, which won't be up for a few weeks:
